Leaf-bundled Dyed Cotton Fabric Project Bag

My first bundled leaf and copper pipe dyeing experiment left me with two pieces of cotton fabric with some interesting designs.  I decided to make a small project bag from one of the pieces.  Lined with the same fabric, the bag is about 10" wide and 7" deep, the perfect size to carry a sock-knitting or other small project in.  Sewed completely by hand, using some of my hand-dyed thread for the top stitching, and fastened with an earthy-looking button, it turned out nicely.  It will be a gift for a special young woman in my life, my daughter, who is also a fiber enthusiast and an inspiration for much of what I do.  Tucked inside she will find a special surprise!

Bag strap is 14" x 2 1/2".  Bag is 5 1/4 " across top, 8 " at widest width, 10 1/2" long.  Fastener is 9 1/4" by 2".  These measurements include 1/2" seam.  Both the straps and the fastener, are folded in half lengthwise, with the raw edges folded into the center.  The fastener is then looped so that the two ends are stitched, side by side, into the bag top seam.  Then stitch across the two lengths down to where you just have an inch or so of the loop open for the buttonhole.  I hope that makes sense!

  1. Love this bag, the shape is great as it makes a lot of space, did you use a pattern?

  2. Thanks, Debbie. I made a pattern off of a bag I bought at a craft fair last year. It is a pretty simple pattern. Check back later and I will add a picture of the pattern to the post.
